When you first open a hive, you will need a hive tool to break the propolis seal. Propolis is a sticky substance that bees use to seal cracks and crevices, such as the tiny space between the frames and the hive body. The hive tool works like a bottle opener, helping you pry frames loose. It also has a sharp end you use to scrape off burr comb or wax moth debris.
It is designed to generate smoke from the smoldering of various fuels, hence the name. A bee smoker is used when you want to calm the bees while either inspecting the hive, working around it, or harvesting. Smokers have a fire chamber that you fill with flammable material such as wood shavings or paper which is lit to smolder. Squeezing the smoker’s bellow pushed out the smoke into the hive. The smoke creates a signal to the bees that there is a fire which leads them to consume the honey which prevents
The uncapping knife works just like the uncapping fork. It can either be electric or manual. An electric knife melts the wax as you slide it across the surface of the frame. It speeds up the uncapping process.
The hive consists of precision-made rectangular boxes which fit one on top of the other. It has at least two boxes (supers) with the lower chamber called the brood chamber. Between the brood chamber and the super sometimes a queen excluder is placed. It limits egg laying activity of the queen to the brood chamber only. The wooden frames are “wired” and complemented with a sheet of wax foundation. Each box contains a set of framed combs. During harvesting the frames are removed and put into a extracting machine, which removes the honey leaving the combs intact. The combs are then returned into the hive for reuse by the bees.
